Workplace Absence Focus at Conference

by Robert Hunt on September 8, 2008

The 2008 Annual Absence survey carried out by the CIPD shows that workplace absence is costing the average employer £666 per employee every year. As well as the expected colds and upset stomachs; stress, anxiety and family commitments were identified by the survey as major causes of employee absence.

An upcoming conference from the Institute – ‘Spotlight on Absence Management’ – will offer solutions to the problem of absence and measures that organisations can take to reduce absence.

Ben Willmott, Employee Relations Adviser, CIPD said: ‘In the current economic climate, employers simply cannot afford to lose any more days to absence than necessary. In addition high levels of absence are often an indicator of low levels of employee engagement and morale, which is central to organisational productivity and performance.

‘Implementing an effective absence management strategy is crucial if absence is to be managed effectively and consistently and in order to support employees’ health and wellbeing.’
