The Chartered Management Institute has given its broad support to many of the proposals outlined in the Government’s consultation on ‘a new right to request time to train for employees in England’.
However, based on the views of 1,423 respondents to a study on the issue, the Institute also urges Government to consider the impact some of the proposals will have on employer-employee relationships and small businesses.
Ruth Spellman, chief executive of the CMI, said: ‘There is an urgent need to increase levels of skills training, particularly those associated with leadership and management, and we believe that the DIUS proposals will have a positive effect. Our most recent survey shows that 64 per cent of employers consider that the new proposals will increase training levels, with nearly 60 per cent agreeing that it would improve employee motivation.
‘The proposals come as the need for leadership and management skills is growing across the economy. Figures show that the number of UK managers is predicted to grow by 1.3 per cent per annum between now and 2014, yet 36 per cent of organisations report that their managers are not proficient. The bottom line is that we need more, better qualified managers in the UK in order to remain competitive on a global scale.’
