Hands up everyone who can recognise a sheep when they see one. Well done! You have beaten the one in 10 people who apparently don’t know what they look like. Presumably you would also not confuse a hare with a deer – unlike another one in 10.
These are just a couple of the mind-boggling results of a Travelodge survey about the countryside. What’s more, 74% of people polled did not recognise a horse chestnut tree (have they never played conkers?); 44% did not recognise an English oak, and 83% did not recognise the common Bluebell.
But why should any of this bother us? Simply that if people are so lacking in such very basic general knowledge how can we expect them to develop and learn new skills?
