Why do we bother?

by Robert Hunt on April 3, 2009

We are spending millions of pounds each year on adult basic education courses that are a total waste of time and money.  Not my opinion but that of Professor Anna Vignoles, an education economist with the Institute of Education, part of the University of London.

Speaking earlier today at the Institute of Fiscal Studies, she pointed out that short sharp basic skills courses do not work and that the best way of learning the ‘three R’s’ was at an early age whilst at school.

Professor Vignoles will not endear herself to anyone with a vested interest in adult basic skills training, but she is an academic with an impressive track record.  Perhaps its time to listen to people like her, rather than keep pouring money into something that does not have any proven benefits?

We certainly need a well-educated workforce, but if Prof Vignoles is correct then this is not the way to go about getting one.
