Inappropriate emails have hit the headlines again. In Westminster we have had the resignation of Gordon Brown’s aide Damien McBride and in Lancashire we have 14 County Council staff currently suspended.
Whether McBride was just the ‘fall guy’ is not clear, but the debacle surrounding his emails should be a lesson to all in politics.
In Lancashire, County Council Chief Executive Ged Fitzgerald has today posted a terse message on the Council website: “I can confirm that 14 staff members have been suspended, pending an investigation into alleged inappropriate email use.
“At the county council, we believe all our staff have a duty to use email in a responsible manner, and our priority at this time is to ascertain the facts around the allegations and ensure that the right action is taken.”
According to media reports the suspensions centre on allegedly racist comments in emails.
Every organisation should have a clear email policy – and no doubt Lancashire County Council has such a policy in place. If that is the case then its employees should be sure that they adhere to it.
