HR managers rate top survival skills

by Robert Hunt on May 6, 2009

We live in turbulent times and so perhaps not surprisingly ‘effective management of change’ is the top ‘HR skill for survival’, according to the results of a poll on the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) online forum, Communities.

Over 400 respondents chose three competencies they believed were most important to establish the function’s effectiveness and credibility in their organisation, with almost half (46%) highlighting ‘effective management of change’. This was closely followed by ‘strategic thinking’ (44%) and ‘business knowledge’ (36%).

Rebecca Clake of the CIPD comments: “It’s important that HR people develop a skill- set which equips them to deal with the challenges of the current economic environment and for preparing their people and business for the future”

She is quite right, and her comments apply equally to everyone in management. Digging ourselves out of the recession isn’t going to be easy, and every manager needs to ensure that she or he has the right blend of skills in place.
