A key management body is warning that that organisations across the UK are in danger of becoming ‘rudderless’ and stale, with employers running the risk of losing their future leaders by failing to provide adequate training.
The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) has released its warning following a series of research projects ahead of Learning at Work Day (14 May).
According to the findings of the CMI research, employers run the risk of losing their future leaders because they are failing to provide adequate training (46%) or career opportunities (also 46%) as a result of the recession. With more senior function heads made redundant over the past year (2.3 %) than junior staff (1.3%), many organisations are facing the prospect of a future without adequate leadership experience.
Worryingly, the figures show that over one-third (38 per cent) of managers believe that their organisations’ management development will decrease over the next six months.
Cutting back may seem like a good idea just now – but it is the companies with the courage to invest in their management development which stand to benefit the most when the recession is over.
