Phone line to support whistle-blowing nurses

by Robert Hunt on May 11, 2009

Good news for potential whistle-blowers in the NHS. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has launched a dedicated telephone line to allow its members to talk in confidence about serious worries that patient safety is being put at risk in their workplace.

It has been launched at the same time as a survey of over 5000 RCN members showed that nearly two-thirds of nurses have raised concerns about patient safety with their employers and more than one in three of those say no action was taken.

It also follows the case of RCN member Margaret Haywood who was struck off the nursing register after she exposed poor care on a Panorama programme.

While the phone line might be good news, its also a sad reflection of the state that parts of the NHS are in – and particularly a reflection of rank bad management!
