I’ve just read a very interesting article on the BBC News website about one woman’s fight for equal pay.
Journalist Alison Trowdale recounts the story of Julie Hayward, then working in a factory kitchen, who battled for 10 years under the Equal Pay Act – which had been passed years before – to get the same wages as male workers in the same company.
Julie Hayward’s case is relevant today because, despite the Law and her victory which was only settled through a House of Lords ruling in 1988, we still do not have equal pay.
But things may now begin to change at last. The Equalities Bill, if it becomes Law, will force many employers to reveal, by 2013, how much they pay men compared with women.
And Julie? She now heads a council’s youth service with a £3m budget.
