So the Speaker of the House of Commons, Michael Martin has finally fallen on his sword this afternoon – and not before time, some would say.
But so far he is clinging onto his Parliamentary seat – just like every other ‘Honourable’ Member whose creative approach to expenses has kept us entertained and infuriated recently.
Any sensible organisation keeps firm control on its employees’ expense claims, requiring not just proof of expenditure but also justification for that expenditure when there is any query.
What a pity that basic business practice does not seem to extend to the House of Commons. Perhaps if it did then my local MP would not have been paid for fripperies such as work on their garden.
Well done the Daily Telegraph for exposing the whole shoddy system.
