Daily Telegraph readers were no doubt spluttering over their cornflakes this morning on reading that we are heading for deep cuts in the NHS budget.
According to the paper, NHS boss David Nicholson has told NHS finance directors that they have to make between £15 billion and £20 billion in ‘efficiency savings’ between 2011 and 2014
.
The story also says that where NHS Trusts fail to deliver savings they could face tough penalties.
NHS spending has, of course, risen significantly in recent years but it seems the party’s over now.
Of course, some of those Daily Telegraph readers will be signed up to one of the private healthcare schemes, so they’ll be all right. As for the rest of us, who knows what will happen?
