Beware the six month shelf-life

by Robert Hunt on June 17, 2009

Been made redundant? Then beware your six months shelf-life. Recently redundant people apparently have only six months to get back into work before the stigma of being unemployed kicks in.

That’s according to new research from the Institute of Leadership & Management. The Institute’s survey: Bouncing back – attitudes to unemployment , based on a survey of over 1,000 managers, shows that unemployment doesn’t initially carry the stigma that people losing their jobs might fear. Most managers who responded said the employment status of applicants was irrelevant as they didn’t consider it an indicator of ability or performance in the current economic climate.

However, after six months out of work the picture changes, with over a quarter of employers becoming less likely to hire someone they consider to be long-term unemployed.

Time to take another look at that CV?
