Pictograms – confusion or clarity?

by Robert Hunt on July 4, 2009

Do you know the international road sign for snow? What about the sign for a queue? And how about the sign for an accident? Well done if you know all three!

Apparently the Highways Agency is planning to introduce these – and other – pictograms on electronic traffic signs in the North-West, replacing the word messages currently used.

I can just see the company car drivers lining up back at the office to explain their latest prang: ‘Honest boss, all I was doing was trying to figure out what that new sign meant and I just slammed into the bloke in front…’

Time for companies to review their driver training programmes? As for me, I have enough trouble sorting out some of the pictograms for ‘Ladies’ and ‘Gents’!
