Compulsory Retirement doesn’t help businesses

by Robert Hunt on July 10, 2009

Imposing a compulsory retirement age on the workforce can lead to a loss of valuable knowledge and talent.  That’s the key finding of a survey of nearly 200 HR professionals.

The research, carried out by TAEN – The Age and Employment Network, and the Employers Forum on Age, indicates that almost two-thirds of employers who operate a mandatory retirement age agree that it results in a loss of talented staff who then have to be replaced.

The two commissioning organisations have published their findings just a couple of days before the government is expected to indicate a shift in attitude towards the current mandatory retirement age – and a week before a High Court hearing on the subject is due to begin.
