Government confusion over retirement stats

by Robert Hunt on July 13, 2009

Hot on the heels of research that indicates compulsory retirement of employees is bad for business comes a Government announcement that a review of the default retirement age is being brought forward to next year.

Presumably this change of timing has nothing to do with the High Court case on the matter which is due to start later this week!

The government’s press release contains the usual somewhat selective facts. It
tells us that ‘the majority of people retire before 65, however 1.3m people choose to work beyond state pension age.’

Just a minute – the state pension age for women is still 60. So if most of them retire at that age then of course that’s going to bump up the number of people retiring before 65!

Why can’t we get some straight facts out of the government for once? This is an important matter for every employer – and especially for HR professionals – and we could do without misleading statements like that.
