Swine ‘flu – an excuse for a week off?

by Robert Hunt on August 6, 2009

Are some people pretending to have swine ‘flu so that they can bunk off work? Yes, according to Employment Law Advisory Services (ELAS). The organisation says it has been inundated with enquiries from managers who claim colleagues without any signs of illness are taking time off under the guise of having the flu.

Given that this year’s ‘Barbecue Summer’ has so far been a washout for most of us, I hardly think those people are taking time off to sit and sunbathe!

However, according to ELAS, more than a thousand companies across the country say staff have been logging-on to an NHS self-diagnosis website to extend their summer holidays.

I suppose there will always be a few people who ‘try it on’, but it hardly means that everyone who is off work is skiving. I guess employers will always think the worst of their employees. That seems to go with the territory, unfortunately.
