Grim news from the Government: the number of 18-24 year olds not in education, employment or training – the so-called NEETS – went up to 835,000 in the second quarter of this year.
Not surprisingly, the TUC has responded by calling for more employers to take on apprentices and for the Government to ensure its guarantee of training or work for young people out of work continues to be well funded.
But is anything being done to stop young people becoming NEETS in the first place? Most of the 835,000 will have left school with little or nothing by way of qualifications despite 10 years or so of compulsory education – but why?
There are clearly major problems with our education system that are simply being ignored!
