Call to employers to plan for swine flu problems

by Robert Hunt on September 5, 2009

Is your organisation ready for the next wave of swine flu? Probably not, as most of us seem to think (or hope!) that the problem has already gone away.

Just when we are getting nice and complacent those nice people at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), in conjunction with the Business Continuity Institute (BCI) have issued us all with a wake-up call.

They say that UK businesses should prepare for possible staff absence rates of up to 50% for periods of between two and four weeks this autumn and winter in their contingency planning arrangements for the expected second wave of swine flu. But the majority of employers have either weak or no plans to cope with the problem, which could (for example) see school closures and with them the knock-on effects on childcare provision.

Me? I’m stocking up on OTC cold remedies, books and DVDs in case I get struck down.  But given that the government estimates of absences are much lower than those in the CIPD/BCI report I don’t suppose I’ll have chance to enjoy them!
