There’s yet another call for an additional bank holiday. This time the call comes from a coalition of organisations urging a ‘Community Day’ holiday.
The idea is that it should be introduced in 2012 to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the London Olympics and Paralympics and (their words) ‘seal a triumphant year for volunteers across the UK’.
The coalition includes the TUC ands various bodies concerned with voluntary service and community action.
Is this in addition to all of the other additional bank holidays that people have been proposing over the last few years, such as Trafalgar Day?
I think the Spanish have a good idea. Traditionally people have had a saint’s name as one of their Christian names. And when it is the feast day of their particular saint they take the day off. A lot less hassle than half the country shutting down!
