I wonder how many kids have been ‘written off by the system over the years on the grounds that they were ‘thick’ – but were in fact dyslexic.
This thought came to mind when I found that this is Dyslexia Awareness Week. Apparently an astonishing 10 per cent of the population has dyslexia, although presumably the severity of the problem varies a good deal.
Perhaps all of us involved in staff training and development should bear that 10 per cent in mind when preparing materials and presentations.
But it’s not all bad news. The dyslexia charities say that people with dyslexia also have a number of strengths including innovative and ‘big picture’ thinking, excellent trouble shooting and problem solving skills, strong visual skills and determination.
