It’s usually good to be first at something or other, but it seems that Britain is top of the European league – in shoplifting!
Globally we are ‘only’ in third place behind the USA and Japan, so we have some ground to make up.
But what’s this got to do with staff training and development? Quite a lot. Some major retailers have consistently cut staff to the bare minimum, not bothered to invest in staff training and paid only the minimum wage.
Of course shoplifting is a crime and I am appalled by the latest statistics. But do I have any sympathy for the (mainly) large companies affected? Not on your nellie! For most of them their shoplifting losses probably cost less than having adequate staffing levels.
