When will they learn?

by Robert Hunt on November 13, 2009

As sure as night follows day, a NHS body somewhere or other is going to get its knuckles rapped over Data Protection Act breaches.

The latest candidates are the Great Yarmouth and Waveney PCT and Gloucestershire PCT. They follow closely on the heels of Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.

Great Yarmouth and Waveney had two desk-top computers stolen which contained details of 1000 occupational therapy staff and patients. Gloucestershire had no less than six desk-top computers stolen containing records of 2270 patients.

Maidstone had a laptop stolen from its audiology department. This followed the theft of three other laptops back in August.

I never cease to be amazed at the cavalier fashion in which patient data – and NHS property – is handled by staff.

At this rate it will soon become news when an NHS body is NOT in trouble with the Information Commissioner’s Office!
