A specialist training programme in data protection for NHS organisations is being launched by Fuse Learning.
The company, which provides learning and development services to a number of PCTs and acute Trusts, is launching the programme in response to the growing number of Data Protection Act breaches by NHS bodies.
Fuse Learning director Michael Packman explained: “The Information Commissioner’s Office has reported that more than a dozen NHS bodies have been in breach of the Act this year, for a variety of reasons.
“Those reasons range from thefts of hardware containing sensitive or personal data, to carelessness or sheer stupidity on the part of individuals. However, whatever the reason, the breaches mean that data about thousands of people may have fallen into the hands of criminals.
“It is quite clear that either some organisations are not taking the Act seriously enough, or that the training they currently offer staff is not robust.”
The Fuse Learning programme covers all of the key points of the Act, and supporting legislation and regulations, to do with the recording, handling, storage and dissemination of sensitive patient and staff data.
