‘Tis the season for… a punch-up

by Robert Hunt on December 2, 2009

We may be into the season of goodwill but, according to a new survey, one in ten workers know of someone from their organisation who has either been disciplined or dismissed for inappropriate behaviour at the staff Christmas party.

According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) survey of 2,000 employees some 29 per cent of the people were in trouble for fighting, 17 per cent for sexual harassment and 12 per cent for bullying.

Many people were also disciplined for what is termed ‘other inappropriate behaviour’, which presumably covers a host of sins – including some that may have seemed funny at the time such as what the survey coyly terms ‘unorthodox use of the photocopier’.

Some organisations are, of course, cutting back on Christmas celebrations citing the recession and cost-cutting.  I suppose that’s one way of curbing high spirits – and maybe saving on photocopier paper too!
