Good News For the HR Team

by Robert Hunt on December 14, 2009

Jobs might be disappearing like snow in sunshine, but its good news for the HR function where it seems that career prospects are still good.

Only 35 per cent of HR departments have had to decrease the size of their department in the past year, whilst 23 per cent actually increased the number of staff and 42 per cent reported no change in their staff numbers.

The figures come from an Incomes Data Services research report ‘The HR Function – A survey of HR structures, pay and conditions’ which covered 178 organisations, with over 7,000 HR staff and almost 600,000 employees.

Of course, the cynics amongst us might suggest that the HR function is needed in order to help dispose of other staff. Tut! Tut! But in fact the report suggests that there is some truth in that point of view, albeit phrased rather more diplomatically.

So, with the report also indicating that the average HR director is on over £91,000 a year perhaps its time for some of us to look at a change of career?
