The New Year may seem far away as we look forward to Christmas, but apparently the top resolution for 2010 for managers is to put their team’s development first.
This will, they say, take precedence over traditional priorities such as networking or spending more time with customers and clients.
Given the oft-criticised state of UK management this is excellent news. But how long will it last, given that most people forget or abandon their New Year resolutions by mid-January?
The notion of the top resolution comes from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Future Forecast survey. The results indicate ‘that business leaders recognise the importance of looking inwards and that putting staff back at the heart of their organisations will enhance their chances of a speedy post-recession recovery.’
But how many times do we hear phrases on the lines of ‘our staffs are our greatest asset’? This is usually followed by an announcement that the organisation is about to dispose of a tranche of that asset.
If the CMI survey provides correct that that will be really good, but if organisations really want to support their staff then many need to increase their investment in training and development, rather than regarding it an optional expense.
