2010 – A Tough Year for Employees?

by Robert Hunt on December 28, 2009

It looks as though employees are going to feel the squeeze again in the New Year, with a lot of businesses planning wage freezes and others thinking about removing benefits.

That’s according to The British Chambers of Commerce’s latest Monthly Business Survey of 260 employers.

Some 63 per cent said they are planning wage freezes or pay cuts, while 18 per cent are considering the removal of benefits, such as bonuses and gym membership.
That’s all very well, of course, provided the load is spread. But all too often it is the lower paid who suffer, while the top earners seem to be protected.

I also noticed there was nothing about staff development. Surely the BCC could have asked its respondents what they were doing to improve staff efficiency and morale by ensuring that this area was not cut – and maybe even expanded.
