Do you handle personal data at work? Then watch out, the maximum penalty for security breaches is likely to go up to a stonking half million pounds in April!
The Information Commissioner’s Office is clearly fed up with the number of serious breaches of data it has to deal with, most of which seem to come from somewhere within the public sector, with NHS bodies among the main culprits.
The Commissioner, Christopher Graham, said: “These penalties are designed to act as a deterrent and to promote compliance with the Data Protection Act. I remain committed to working with voluntary, public and private bodies to help them stick to the rules and comply with the Act. But I will not hesitate to use these tough new sanctions for the most serious cases where organisations disregard the law.”
Fair enough; we have all been warned.
Fuse Learning offers training in aspects of the Data Protection Act, particularly in relation to the gathering, handling, storage and transmission of personal data within the public sector, including the NHS.
