Fuse Learning Initiative Combats NHS Training Cuts

by Robert Hunt on January 12, 2010

A solution to the problem of cuts in NHS funding for staff training and development has been developed by specialist consultancy Fuse Learning.

The company, which works with a number of NHS organisations, has created a highly cost-effective programme that helps combat the budget reductions brought about by the economic downturn.

The programme focuses on key skills needed by non-medical and nursing staff at all levels and is being offered in the form of price-sensitive packages which can be tailored to suit the requirements of individual Trusts.

Director Michael Packman explained: “We recognise that NHS bodies, in both the primary and acute sectors, are faced with a dilemma. On the one hand it is more important than ever to have a well-trained workforce at all levels. On the other hand learning and development funding is suffering as cuts are being made in order to protect essential services.

“However, investing in training helps to ensure that administrative and support staff are able to work at their optimum efficiency. Therefore there is a hidden cost in trying to make savings in this area. Our experience of working with the NHS – and with other public sector organisations – enables us to offer training that is particularly relevant.

“NHS training in many areas has tended to focus on staff at levels 5 and above, even though an estimated half of staff are in bands 1-4.  There is, therefore, an opportunity to improve efficiency by putting more emphasis on improving the skills of this sector of the workforce through fostering a culture of continuous learning.”

Typically, bands 1-4 training can include topics such as communications skills, team working, and customer care skills. Training for staff at levels 5 and above varies but can include presentation skills, managing and motivating a team and change management.

The Fuse Learning programmes are being offered at special rates to reflect budget cuts, but without any compromise in the quality of the training delivered.
