People-centred Approach Needed

by Robert Hunt on January 16, 2010

A new study by The Work Foundation has confirmed what many of us already thought about leadership: that a people-centred approach works better than a controlling and target-driven approach.

The study: ‘Exceeding Expectation: the principles of outstanding leadership’ is based on over 250 in-depth qualitative interviews over two years within six major organisations.

Lead author Penny Tamkin said that outstanding leaders focus on people, attitudes and engagement, co-creating vision and strategy. Instead of one-to-one meetings centred on tasks, they seek to understand people and their motives. Instead of seeing people as one of many priorities, they put the emphasis on people issues first.”

About time we heard some more commonsense about leadership and management!
