First Class Treatment – Courtesy of the NHS

by Robert Hunt on January 26, 2010

A few days ago I found myself an unwilling customer of my local hospital’s A&E Department, having succumbed to a potentially life-threatening condition.

The hospital is quite new and so has had its share of teething troubles. Local residents also complain repeatedly about parking problems it causes and some grumble about the noise of the air ambulance arriving and leaving.   Nationally we also hear a lot about NHS cuts and demoralised staff.

But the service I received was second to none from everyone involved. It was a busy evening but I was treated immediately and my condition was monitored constantly by the medical and nursing staff. They detained me overnight in a small short-stay A& E ward which was superior to some hotels I have encountered. Even the breakfast was good!

The NHS is ever a political football, with more and more talk of ‘creeping privatisation’ but if my experience is anything to go by then the politicians should remember the old saying: ‘if it ain’t broke – don’t fix it.’
