More help for older workers is needed, according to The Work Foundation. It’s my birthday and so perhaps not the best day to learn this – after all, none of us wants to be reminded that the calendar can only go forwards.
Anyway, the call has come in response to the labour market statistics that are out today.
Commenting on them, Ian Brinkley of the Foundation pointed out that while the government can claim some credit for limiting the rise in unemployment among younger people there is a more serious problem developing for adult workers.
He said that long-term claimant unemployment is rising for all age groups. In January about 4 per cent of claimants under 25 were unemployed for more than 12 months, but the share of claimants between 25 and 49 was 18 per cent and for over 50s was 21 per cent.
And, of course, it is those older workers who are going to find it hardest to get back into employment – despite the fact that some may have years of valuable experience.
