“Leadership is a really huge topic and pretty much the number one talent challenge.”
The words of Josh Bersin in an interview with Verity Gough of TrainingZone in the aftermath of Learning Technologies 2010 at which Bersin was a keynote speaker.
Bersin, CEO and President of Bersin and Associates, said that this was particularly the case at lower levels, with most companies feeling happy with their senior leadership, but they don’t feel happy with their first-line management and their progression process into first-line management.
When the economy was growing companies were hiring a lot, just because there was more business, he said. With the economy flat companies are realising that they have managers who really do not know how to do their job. As a result leadership development is being pushed down to lower levels, on the basis that without good managers companies are just not going to survive.
Another reminder that without investment today, there may be nothing to invest in tomorrow!
