Companies must now focus on adaptable leadership skills, those needed to deal with the chaos, the ambiguity and uncertainty we will be faced with in the future. Wise words from a new white paper published by Canadian professional services firm The Beacon Group.
The authors of Leadership Development Trends 2010, Kyle Couch and R Douglas Williamson, go on to say that learning and development programmes must be tailored to three key populations:
• Leaders- those tasked with making strategic decisions that affect the future of the organisation
• Mangers – who, through their people, execute the strategy set out by the leaders
• High potentials – those who will become the next generation of leaders within the company
All too often it seems that in the UK we focus on management training and ignore the fact that leadership talent also needs to be nurtured and developed.
Last word to Couch and Williamson, who in their conclusion say: “Management training and leadership development in 2010 is not about going back to basics. In fact the theme should be ‘never again’. Never again will we find ourselves facing this many leadership gaps.”
