Despite all three main parties making a commitment in their election manifestos to getting rid of the default retirement age it now seems that it is to stay for now – a move that has clearly angered the Employers Forum on Age (EFA).
In the wake of the formation of the Conservative LibDem coalition, the EFA‘s Rachel Krys said: “This is a missed opportunity for the new Government. The default retirement age is fundamentally discriminatory, based on the assumption that age affects someone’s ability to do their job. Despite manifesto commitments from both parties, this new Government is not prepared to go far enough to ensure that age cannot be used arbitrarily to dismiss people.”
I suppose the problem is that with bright young things like David Clegg and Nick Cameron now running the shop there is little thought given to people 20 or 30 years their senior who may be willing and well able to work past the default retirement age.
Isn’t it often the case that some manifesto promises – from whichever party or parties gains power – seem to disappear like snow in Spring time once the elections are over?
