We’re told that Britain needs a better educated and better trained workforce and yet new stats show that organisations in the UK cut their training and development budgets by four per cent and reduced training staff by five per cent last year.
The stats come from a new study by Bersin & Associates. Companies surveyed spent an average of £621 per learner last year, with an average headcount of 7.1 training staff for every 1,000 learners.
Yet independent experts say that if we are to compete in the global workplace it is essential that we close the so-called ‘skills gap’. And that is not going to happen if companies fail to invest in staff learning and development.
Interestingly, the study shows that the largest chunk of funding – 27% of training budgets – went toward profession and industry-specific training programmes such as certifications and other training specific to a job or industry. The second largest area of funding was leadership development, which claimed 23% of total spending.
These findings tie in with our experience at Fuse Learning. We focus on providing our clients with tailored learning solutions and in addition we have seen a significant increase in demand for leadership development training over the last year or so.
