Leaders lack leadership skills

At Fuse Learning we’re finding that more and more organisations are seeking leadership development training – and new research indicates that such training is certainly needed.

According to the new edition of the Ashridge Management Index: Meeting the Challenges of the 21st century, there’s a serious lack of confidence among managers about leaders in their organisations.

The findings indicate that while 71 per cent of managers surveyed describe a positive leadership environment within their organisations, only 41per cent believe leaders in those organisations are developed to lead change well.

One aspect of good leadership is good communication and again leaders were found wanting. Just over half of the managers surveyed said that that top leaders in their organisation do not spend sufficient time communicating with staff.

Leaders not communicating? What sort of ‘leadership’ is that? Leaders need to be able to inspire and enthuse – difficult if they think mushroom management is the way to do it!
