Ever felt like throwing a ‘sickie’? According to a new survey we took 27 million of them last year at a cost of £2.5 billion, causing problems for management and colleagues alike.
The figures come from the latest CBI/Pfizer Absence and Workplace Health Survey which also reveals that employees took 180 million sick days last year, including the ‘sickie’ days, at a total cost of around £16.8 billion.
Sickness absence remains higher in the public sector and larger organisations have higher rates of absence than small ones.
The good news is that the rate of absence is the lowest since the survey began in 1987. The bad news is that we have the World Cup coming up, not to mention Wimbledon and other major sporting events such as the three week long Tour de France cycle race.
Oh dear, I think I might be going down with a sore throat in a couple of weeks…
