Time was when if you needed more expertise you simply recruited. But a new survey shows that those days are over, thanks to the recession and its aftermath, with two thirds of organisations saying they are focusing on developing talent in-house.
According to the findings of the latest Resourcing and Talent Planning survey from the CIPD some 66 per cent are committed to developing talent in-house compared to only 40 per cent in 2009. In addition, more than half of the organisations surveyed are now using methods to retain rather than recruit new talent, up from just over a third last year.
So, it’s really a case of getting everyone to work smarter and ensuring that key people are not poached. Nothing new in some ways, but interesting that these issues are now seen as much more important.
Clearly learning and development play an important part both in developing talent and helping to retain staff. At Fuse Learning we are engaged in a wide-ranging training programme in the public sector, where budgets are being cut and there is more need than ever to upskill employees. In addition, we are increasingly involved in leadership development programmes in the public and private sectors, where organisations want to keep good people by developing a pool of middle and senior management talent.
