Now it’s awards for stress!

by Robert Hunt on July 8, 2010

Well, not quite.  In fact a new award scheme has been launched to recognise the UK’s best organisations when it comes to beating stress in the workplace.

The National Stress Management Awards are the brainchild of the International Stress Management Association (ISMA) which says they will ‘celebrate successful stress management policies and promote best practice in business’.

It seems to me to be a reflection on our times that we even need the ISMA, let alone an awards scheme.

But the ISMA says that work-related stress levels are reaching new heights, with 17% of British workers last year reporting that their jobs were either very or extremely stressful. Time, therefore, for organisations, both public and private sector, to take a good look at their stress-management policies.

All this reminds me of a boss I used to have. Whenever anyone mentioned stress his response was to snap: ‘Stressed? I haven’t got time to get stressed.”

Shame about his heart attack; he was OK really.
