Pip Pip – It’s National Cherry Day

by Robert Hunt on July 17, 2010

Learning: did you know that today is National Cherry Day?  Thought not; I only found out by chance.

Apparently, according to a government press release, during the 20th century we lost 90 per cent of our cherry orchards. The good news is that in the last few years we have begun to plant some new ones – although we still import almost all of our cherries.

The big problem with having special days or weeks for anything – and there are loads of them – is that in the main they simply go largely unrecognised.

For instance – do you know when Adult Learner’s Week takes place? Or what about Workers Memorial Day, set up to remember people who have died in the course of their work?  So how on earth are we supposed to know about a day to promote cherries?

In case you are interested, the fruit is not native to the UK but is yet another thing for which we have to thank the Romans. Oh, and the stones contain a substance which turns into cyanide when metabolised by the body.  You never know when you might need trivia such as this.

For the record, Adult Learners Week, organised by NIACE, took place between 15-21 May.  Workers Memorial Day was marked on 28 April, the International Day of Action for Safety and Health at Work.
