Are YOU an effective manager?

by Robert Hunt on November 11, 2011

Your are? That’s good, because you are not contributing to the ineffective management that could be costing British business over £19 billion a year.

I always love it when figures like that are bounced around. 19 billion! But that’s apparently the annual cost of lost working hours according to the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

The figure is based on a study of 2000 employees across the UK. According to the findings, 75 per cent of workers waste almost two hours out of their working week due to inefficient managers.

The CMI says that taking the average hours wasted in a week (1.51) across the 48 weeks a year that the majority of workers work, this equates to a loss of £900 per employee per year – and a total loss to UK plc of £19.3billion, calculated at a median value rate.Phew!

Worst management practices responsible for time lost include unclear communication (33 per cent); lack of support (33 per cent); micro-management (26 per cent); and lack of direction (25 per cent).

But perhaps of more concern are some of the other findings of the survey, notably those to do with discrimination and bullying. Some 13% of those surveyed reported witnessing managers exhibit discriminatory behaviour towards employees based on gender, race, age or sexual orientation; and 27% said they had witnessed managers bullying or harassing employees. Not acceptable practices under any circumstances.

Returning to ineffective managers, a lot of the work of Fuse Learning is now concerned with management and leadership. Despite the difficult ecenomic conditions – or perhaps because of it –  many organisations realise that they need to invest in ensuring that their managers are developed to their full potential.
