Want to get ahead? Then do nothing about it!

I’ve spent a lot of time with people who have used their own time and money to learn new skills and gain qualifications to help them progress. Yet it seems that many employees who are not satisfied with their career progression won’t do anything to help themselves.

Some 42 per cent of the 2,000 people who took part in a newly-published CMI study said they were unhappy with their career progression. Yet while 45 per cent said they could advance by studying for a professional qualification in their own time only 12 per cent said they were planning to do so and, tellingly, only 4 per cent were actually doing anything about it!

When asked why they were not doing anything 39 per cent said cost was the problem; 30 per cent said it was the time it would take to complete and 13 per cent didn’t know what qualification would be best for them.

Many employers already help their employees to improve their skills and gain relevant quyalifications.  As cost appears to be the major stumbling block, according to the study, then perhaps more employers should consider doing the same?
