Taking an Evidence-based Approach to NHS Leadership

The NHS faces major challenges as it seeks to meet the aspirations of its staff, the public at large, and its political masters. To meet those challenges there is an urgent need to develop people with the ability to lead its multitude of organisations in the future.

Overall responsibility for inspiring, developing and nurturing the requisite pool of potential future leaders is being placed with the 10 Strategic Health Authorities in England and Wales in the first instance.

The ‘Guidance Document for NHS Talent and Leadership’ is very specific about responsibilities being placed upon each SHA Chief Executive, Chair and Board Member:

NHS bodies of all kinds will be expected to implement evidence-based measures to encourage, enthuse and develop potential leaders within their own organisations.

A key factor in implementing the Guidance is the need for evidence:

“The plans will be evidence-based, demonstrate openness and transparency, and ensure that leadership teams are confident in supporting talent and leadership processes and of their roles and accountabilities within them.”
